Overview of Windows Server 2003

Microsoft released Windows Server 2003 on April 14, 2003 which was designed to act as a server operating system. Win Server 2003 was the predecessor to Windows server 2008 and successor to Windows server 2000. This version of Windows OS provides many features, one of them is compatibility mode which runs older applications more efficiently.

Different Editions and features of Windows 2003 Server

  • Windows Server 2003 Web

    The main purpose of Windows Server 2003 Web operating system is to create and host web applications as well as XML web services. Windows server 2003 includes Internet Information Service (IIS) 6.0 that provides an architecture for creating and publishing web applications.

  • Windows Server 2003 Standard

    The standard version of this Windows operating system was developed mainly for small and medium sized businesses. The main features of this edition is that it allows file and printer sharing. Besides, users can deploy applications that are located in centralized system.

  • Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

    The Enterprise edition of Windows Server 2003 was meant for medium and large businesses. This edition supports 8-node clustering which replicate services and applications in more than one server so that if any server fails then data can be accessed from other servers.

  • Windows Server 2003 Datacenter

    The main advantage of Windows Server 2003 Datacenter over other versions is that it provides high security as well as reliability. Like Enterprise version, Datacenter also has a feature of 8-node clustering.


No more support for Windows Server 2003

Microsoft has ended providing support for Windows Server 2003 on July 14, 2015. Since then, all versions of Windows 2003 sever has not been receiving security patches which makes this operating system more susceptible to malware attack. There can be other issues also like hard disk corruption, deletion of data, and windows crash etc. All these problems can lead to data loss situation.
